Apostles' Creed

The Apostles' Creed

The Apostles' Creed came, not directly from the original Apostles, but rather as an adaptation of the Roman Creed which was formed at the end of the second century.

Creeds are organized statements of beliefs. Creeds like the Apostles' Creed are born by drawing out core Christian beliefs from the Bible and putting them into a compact, list-like statement. This statement can then be used as a tool in a number of ways.

Perhaps one of the slyest ways Satan attacks the Church is from within the Church. Creeds are used to combat false teachings within the Christian Church. They give us a device to measure teaching with- if it goes against the creed then we need to call it into question.

Creeds are used as a teaching instrument because they are short, easy to remember and they have many or all of the core Christian beliefs in one place.

When used as a confession, creeds become an avenue of praise and worship by extolling the virtues of a Holy God.

U.S. Treasury Department

The following is an excerpt from a letter to the Secretary of the Treasury, and is most likely the first official suggestion to acknowledge God on the money of the United State of America.

Ridleyville, PA, Nov. 13, 1861

Dear Sir:

You are about to submit your annual report to Congress respecting the affairs of the national finances.

One fact touching our currency has hitherto been seriously overlooked. I mean the recognition of the Almighty God in some form in our coins.

You are probably a Christian. What if our Republic were now shattered beyond reconstruction? Would not the antiquaries of succeeding centuries rightly reason from our past that we were a heathen nation?...
